Playing the Building

Yesterday, a bunch of coworkers and I headed over to see the installation "Playing the Building." My coworker, and friend, actually happens to write a blog for Creative Time, in addition to his own blog, Heart as Arena and thats how we got our special invitation.

"Creative Time presents Playing the Building, a 9,000-square-foot, interactive, site-specific installation by renowned artist David Byrne. The artist transforms the interior of the landmark Battery Maritime Building in Lower Manhattan into a massive sound sculpture that all visitors are invited to sit and “play.” The project consists of a retrofitted antique organ, placed in the center of the building's cavernous second-floor gallery, that controls a series of devices attached to its structural features—metal beams, plumbing, electrical conduits, and heating and water pipes. These machines vibrate, strike, and blow across the building’s elements, triggering unique harmonics and producing finely tuned sounds. "

It was very interesting! The building was fascinating! No one has been able to go inside that building in over 60 years. So the piano was not really made to play songs like you are accustomed to hearing, But it made more of like, the movie eyes wide open, with tom cruise, types of creepy noises. Its more about of making music with the sounds in the building. Which, if given enough time im sure someone can come up with great melody. I walked around the building staring at every little detail, (im a details person), and it was truly amazing. Here is one pic a coworker took of me examining every detail.

I love the uniqueness of the idea of playing a building, and am so glad that someone got to execute their ideas and art!

And we will end this post in the same way as other posts have ended...This is One reason why I love NY!
